The world God created is such a strange, wonderful, frightening, dangerous and beautiful place. It is filled with so many dichotomies; left - right, up - down, right - wrong, ad infinitum. Yet God, after creating it stood back, like a artist finishing a sculpture, and said "behold, it was very good".
I asked myself, "why did God create so much polarity, when He is good, and then called it very good?"
Then an answer came to me, I didn't much like it, but it does make sense out of so much that we can not explain. Good 'ol' earth is a training ground for the soul, an obstacle course, which way will he go, what will he choose next.
God gave us free will as an act of His love. We can choose hate instead of love, we can choose danger over safety, good over evil. It would seem that these would be easy distinctions to make except for one little problem - emotions.
My emotions tell me to proposition that cute girl, even though I am married. Wisdom says don't. Which will I choose? I see a man in danger, wisdom says help him, fear says don't, again which will I choose?
Mankind after the fall of Adam made so many bad choices that God decided to destroy nearly all of life on this planet then begin again. But, emotions still ruled the day, we still could not walk away from our animal selves and choose to live in the higher spiritual self and to make the choices that would ultimately bring us back into the will of God which would result in paradise.
God in His wisdom, codified good human behavior in what we now term the Ten Commandments. I am finding that these basic principals can be used anytime I am faced with a difficult choice.
In the first three Commandments, I find this basic principle for decision making; Is God going to be honored?
Then through the rest of the commandments I find the following principals; would my parents be proud or honored? Will this decision harm another human being? Is it sexually moral? Will it take something of value from another person without compensation? Is it honest? and lastly is it Selfish?
The Bible is very practical, I am so grateful I made the one decision I didn't have to; that is to follow God's Christ.
